Karisma Kapoor: Salman refused a shot over her clingy outfit

Karisma Kapoor says Salman Khan once refused to shoot with her over a sheer, clingy outfit on Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, and David Dhawan had to step in.

Salman refused a shot over Karisma's clingy outfit

Karisma Kapoor and Salman Khan made some of the most loved Hindi films of the 1990s and early 2000s, but the opening episode of the final Koffee With Karan season is a reminder that their on-screen ease was not always reflected behind the camera. Karisma joined Salman on the couch and told a story from Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge that started with a costume, escalated into an argument, and ended with director David Dhawan caught in the middle.

The outfit standoff

Karisma said she had been genuinely excited about the look. She thought the outfit would land perfectly and that she would ‘kill it’ on camera. Salman, by her account, stopped the moment. He asked what she was wearing and said he would not give a shot while she looked like that.

When Karan Johar asked whether Salman’s objection came from the outfit being overtly sexy, Karisma agreed. She described the problem with the phrase ‘too open and too clingy.’ Salman remembered it slightly differently. For him, the issue was length; he said he kept asking her to get it down before every take, and called the fabric ‘all sheer.’

Karisma said the disagreement became big enough that she complained to David Dhawan, the film’s director. She also described Salman’s behaviour as protective. He would tell her to go and change because he did not like the outfit, and that, she said, is why the two fought a lot.

A partnership that became a draw

The story is easier to understand against the scale of their collaboration. Salman and Karisma appeared in 11 films together across the 1990s and early 2000s. Their hits included:

  • Andaz Apna Apna (1994), also starring Aamir Khan and Raveena Tandon
  • Judwaa (1997)
  • Biwi No. 1 (1999)
  • Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999)
  • Chal Mere Bhai (2000)
  • Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000)

Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, directed by David Dhawan, cast Salman as Raja Oberoi and Karisma as Sapna, a woman raised by three uncles played by Paresh Rawal, Om Puri and Anupam Kher. The romantic comedy succeeded commercially in 2000, with the music and the lead pair’s chemistry doing much of the heavy lifting.

Why the throwback lands now

This is not an explosive fight; it is a very Bollywood disagreement about one costume and two strong opinions. The reason it connects is the timing. Koffee With Karan is in its ninth and final season, and Salman Khan is the first guest. Bringing Karisma into the conversation signals that the show is spending its remaining time on shared history rather than just new interviews.

For fans who grew up watching their films, the anecdote reframes the polished final product. The look that reached the screen often depended on what the actors, the director and the camera could agree on in the moment. Karisma’s version keeps that process human, funny and free of villains.
