Ekta Kapoor has confirmed The Dirty Picture 2, 15 years after the original. Here's what she revealed about the sequel's story and who it might follow.

Ekta Kapoor Confirms The Dirty Picture 2 Is in Development

The confirmation fans have been waiting for

Ekta Kapoor has confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is in development, 15 years after the original opened in cinemas. The producer shared the news on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, where she revealed she has finally found a story she wants to tell through the sequel.

The sequel has floated around as a possibility for years, but this is the first time Kapoor has spoken about it as an active plan. “One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years,” she said. “This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell.”

What made the original a cultural moment

Released in December 2011, The Dirty Picture starred Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor. It drew from the life of Silk Smitha, the South Indian actor who appeared in more than 450 films. Smitha began in entertainment at 18 and rose quickly, but typecasting, career setbacks and relationship failures pushed her into depression. She died by suicide, leaving behind a legacy film enthusiasts still celebrate.

Kapoor was careful about how she framed Smitha. The film, she said, was “about a woman who was condemned for standing up against her sexuality.” But she never saw it as a story of victimhood: “I saw her as someone who celebrated her sexuality, and the film did so well.”

Who will the sequel be about?

Kapoor confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 will revolve around a prominent public figure in the mould of Silk Smitha, but she stopped short of naming that person. A major reveal, she teased, is around the corner.

Here is what we know so far:

  • The sequel is being planned 15 years after the 2011 original
  • It will centre on a prominent figure like Silk Smitha
  • Cast, storyline and release date remain undisclosed
  • Ekta Kapoor has promised a major announcement soon

Why the sequel lands differently now

The original put a woman’s sexual agency at the centre of a mainstream Hindi film, and audiences rewarded it. A sequel arrives in a different conversation — one where the industry talks more openly about choice, consent and the price of being typecast. Kapoor’s insistence that Smitha “celebrated her sexuality” rather than being a victim signals the follow-up will keep that argument alive instead of softening it.

The immediate question for fans is casting. Whether Vidya Balan or any of the original ensemble return is still unknown. Kapoor has promised a major announcement, and if the first film is any guide, the reveal of who the sequel is about will be an event in itself.
