Aishwarya Rai’s Witty Retort to Brad Pitt-Angelina Comparison

by Bollywood Society Desk

A throwback clip from a 2010 BBC interview has pulled Aishwarya Rai Bachchan back into the social media spotlight this week. The reason is not a new film or a red-carpet appearance, but one old line that still lands.

The setup was flattering on the surface. Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan, then three years into their marriage, were introduced as the ‘Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of India’. Aishwarya’s response is what fans keep sharing, fourteen years after it first aired.

The retort that flipped the comparison

Rather than accept the Hollywood shorthand or wave it away, Aishwarya turned it around. ‘What if we turn this around and call them Aishwarya and Abhishek of America,’ she said in the interview, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

That one line reframes the whole exchange. It does not reject the compliment; it simply makes the Indian couple the benchmark. In a culture that often measures Bollywood against Hollywood, the reply was confident, warm and instantly quotable.

What she said about family

The same interview held a more grounded moment. Aishwarya explained why living with her in-laws, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, felt natural. She pointed out that living with family is normal in Indian culture, and that she had lived with her parents until marriage.

Her answer gave the BBC audience context instead of apology. A joint family was not a compromise or an old-fashioned arrangement; it was a cultural setup many Indian viewers recognised immediately. That framing is another reason the clip has not faded.

Their story in a timeline

The clip resurfaces as the couple approaches two decades of marriage. The relationship began long before the comparison:

  • 2000: They first work together in Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, then reunite for Kuch Naa Kaho.
  • 2006: They grow closer during Umrao Jaan and later on the sets of Mani Ratnam’s Guru.
  • After the Guru premiere: Abhishek proposes to Aishwarya on a hotel balcony in New York.
  • April 20, 2007: The couple marry in a private ceremony at the Bachchan family home in Mumbai.
  • November 2011: They welcome their daughter, Aaradhya.

None of the recent chatter needs to read anything into the couple’s present. The charm of the clip is that it shows two people, early in marriage, already comfortable enough to joke on camera and hold their own.

Why the clip still lands

Nearly two decades later, the line has aged well because it flips the default. When the West offers a comparison, the instinct can be to accept it as the higher compliment. Aishwarya’s answer was a gentle no. It made the Indian names the standard and left the interviewer’s frame behind.

For anyone facing a comparison on a red carpet, in an interview or in a boardroom, the move is the same: take the reference, then replace the reference point with your own. Aishwarya made it look effortless, which is exactly why the moment still travels.
