Shailene Woodley

Shailene Diann Woodley or popularly known as Shailene Woodley is an actor and activist from the United States. Woodley was born in San Bernardino, California, as well as reared in Simi Valley, where she began modelling and acting professionally in modest television parts there at age of four. She rose to notoriety after acting in the ABC Family drama series The Secret Life of the American Teenager as Amy Juergens.

Woodley made her cinematic debut in 2011 with The Descendants and then went on to feature in The Spectacular Now, a coming-of-age picture. She got a Cannes Trophée Chopard as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for the former, as well as a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival for the latter.

She rose to prominence after acting in the romantic film The Fault in Our Stars (2014) as well as the science-fiction series The Divergent Series (2014–2016) as Beatrice Prior, a young cancer sufferer. She starred as a sexual assault survivor in the HBO drama series Big Little Lies from 2017 to 2019, for which she received Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She featured in The Mauritanian and The Fallout, both critically praised drama movies, in 2021.

Woodley is indeed an environmental activist who has been on the board of Our Revolution, a political action group.

In 1999, Woodley made her acting debut in the television film Replacing Dad, in which she had a tiny role. She went on to appear in minor television parts in The District and Crossing Jordan (in the latter, she played a 10-year-old version of the titular character played by Jill Hennessy).

Woodley made her feature acting debut in 2011 with The Descendants, in which she portrayed Alex, Matt King’s problematic elder daughter (played by George Clooney). Her performance was well-received by the critics. “Ms Woodley gave one of the harshest, brightest, most convincing teenage performances in recent memory,” observed A. O. Scott of The New York Times. Variety’s Peter Debruge called her performance a “surprise” and stated she “displayed both the sharpness and depth the job needs” in the character of Alex. Woodley was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her performance. She was selected as one of the “Most Beautiful at Every Age” in 2012. Nylon’s “Young Hollywood Issue” named Woodley as one of the “55 Faces of the Future.”

Woodley returned to the role of Tris in The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the sequel to The Divergent Series, in 2015. “Woodley does great work here as she’s done before, as well as continues to be something to watch,” wrote Daniel M. Kimmel of New England Movies Weekly of her portrayal. Despite receiving a more unfavourable critical review than the last picture, Insurgent was an economic success, grossing $295.2 million worldwide in its first weekend. In the series’ penultimate movie, Allegiant, she reprised her role (2016). Nevertheless, the picture received mixed reviews from reviewers and was a box office flop. The last movie inside the series was supposed to be filmed for television, however, Woodley said she wouldn’t be a part of it.
