Who is Anthony Hopkins?

Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins CBE, a Welsh actor, movie director, as well as producer, was born in Cardiff, Wales. Two Academy Awards for Best Actor, four BAFTAs, two Emmys, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, as well as a British Academy Television Award are among his many honours. In 1993, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his contributions to the arts. Hopkins was honoured with such a star upon that Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003 as well as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement in 2008.

Hopkins attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London after graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1957, and then was seen by Laurence Olivier, who encouraged him to attend the Royal National Theatre in 1965. His favourite Shakespeare play, King Lear, was staged at the National.

In 1989, he appeared inside a West End production of M. Butterfly.

Hopkins made his cinematic debut in 1968, as Richard the Lionheart in The Lion in Winter. Richard Attenborough, who helmed five Hopkins movies, dubbed him “the best actor of his generation” within the mid-1970s. In 1991, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Hannibal Lecter inside the psychological horror-thriller The Silence of the Lambs. In the sequel Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon, he repeated his role. The Elephant Man (1980), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), Howards End (1992), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), Shadowlands (1993), Legends of the Fall (1994), Meet Joe Black (1998), The Mask of Zorro (1998), Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), and Thor: Ragnarok (2017) are some of the other notable films.

He was nominated for four more Academy Awards for The Remains of the Day (1993), Nixon (1995), Amistad (1997), and The Two Popes (2019), before winning a fourth BAFTA Award as well as a second Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of such an elderly man suffering from dementia in The Father (2020), making him the oldest Best Actor Oscar winner to date.

Hopkins had managed to appear on tv since his first appearance well with BBC in 1967. For his role in War and Peace, he won a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in 1973. He co-starred inside the BBC movie The Dresser with Ian McKellen in 2015. In 2018, he played alongside Emma Thompson in King Lear. He appeared in the HBO television series Westworld between 2016 and 2018, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
