What exactly is DreamWorks?

DreamWorks Animation LLC is indeed a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, a part of NBCUniversal, which is itself a division of Comcast, which produces animated movies and television shows. As of July 2021, the company had released 41 feature films, including some of the biggest-grossing animated films of all time, the highest of which was Shrek 2 (2004) at the time of its release. The studio’s first film, Antz, was released on October 2, 1998, and its most recent film, The Boss Baby: Family Business, was released on July 2, 2021; the Bad Guys will be released on April 22, 2022, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be released on September 23, 2022, and Trolls 3 will be released on November 17, 2023. Three unnamed films are also set to hit theatres on April 7, 2023, February 9, 2024, and September 27, 2024.

It was founded in 1994 as a section of DreamWorks Pictures with alumni from Amblin Entertainment’s defunct animation arm Amblimation, and it was spun off into its own business in 2004. DreamWorks Animation was purchased by NBCUniversal for $3.8 billion in 2016. The company created several conventional animated films in the beginning, as well as two stop-motion co-production with Aardman Animations, but currently only use computer animation. Its films have won numerous awards and nominations, including three Academy Awards, 41 Emmy Awards, numerous Annie Awards, and multiple Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for The Prince of Egypt, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and the Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon franchises.

Until 2005, DreamWorks Pictures released DreamWorks Animation films, which were later taken over by Paramount Pictures in 2006 and distributed until 2012. In 2013, 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) was named third distributor, a position it retained until 2017. Universal Pictures has been the fourth and final distributor since 2019, and it also owns the majority of the rights to the studio’s back catalogue.

Although most of DreamWorks Animation’s films are produced on the company’s Glendale campus, some of them were created by Pacific Data Images, a DreamWorks subsidiary until its dissolution in 2015. In a similar fashion to Illumination, which has most of its movies animated by Illumination Mac Guff, some movies involve Shrek as well as its sequel, the Madagascar movie franchise, and Megamind till its closure in 2015, in such a similar fashion to Illumination, that has most of its movies animated by Illumination Mac Guff.
