Rarely do we witness our actors expressing true joy and patriotism in anticipation of their film. Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani are two Bollywood actors who are excited about their upcoming film Shershaah because it highlights the sacrifice of the Kargil Martyr Captain Vikram Batra, who gave his life to secure a crucial enemy post during the Kargil War and was posthumously awarded India’s highest military honour, the Param Veer Chakra, for his valour.

Sidharth plays Vikram, while Kiara Advani plays Dimple Cheema, his fiancée who opted to live as his widow after he died. The film recognises their dedication, sacrifice, and love, which was unbound by lifelines and existed indefinitely.

Sidharth Malhotra’s grandpa served in the army and wore the uniform with pride. He says, “One more similarity between Vikram Batra and my family would be that my Dadu was in the Indian Army. My dad went into the Merchant Navy after wondering whether to join the Indian navy. Vikram Batra was deciding whether to go in the army or the Merchant Navy at the start of his career. My Dad especially got excited to see me in uniform.” He’s excited to watch how the Batra family reacts, particularly Vikram’s twin brother Vishal, who is also played by Sidharth in the film.

Kiara spent a lot of time with Dimple Cheema to get to know her, and she admires her tenacity and determination. The actress says about Dimple that, “She still remembers him with so much fondness and she speaks about how they are going to meet soon. She believes in eternal love and romance which is just so beautiful and really tugged at my heart. It is amazing to see somebody who is so strong and who’s stuck by her decisions and made the choices she’s made and still leads a happy life. Just having him in her heart and memories is enough for her.”

The two stars discuss how ecstatic they were to be a part of a historical war film. Kiara was only eight years old when Kargil occurred, and she had no recollection of the fighting. Sidharth, who was 15-16 at the time, recalls watching the battle on TV with his elders. He claims that legendary phrases like “Yeh dil maange more,” spoken by Vikram Batra in a TV interview, gave him chills. “It is a surreal experience today to actually play that character that we all were sitting at home in Delhi watching, and to say that iconic line,” says Sidharth in the cover story.

Kiara Advani concurs, claiming that their film would bring viewers closer to a piece of recent history. “This is one way of paying homage to Captain Vikram Batra in an entertaining way and also making people aware of the war and of everything that took place at that time.”

Shershaah premiered on Amazon Prime Video today, August 12, 2021. To learn more about the film and the experiences of the lead actors Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani, pick up a copy of Filmfare’s August issue. On newsstands and Magzter, you can get a copy right now.
