Karan Johar Slams Bollywood’s ‘Herd Mentality’: ‘My Universe is Cinema, Not Copy-Paste'”

In an era where trends rule and originality often takes a backseat, Karan Johar has spoken out against the “herd mentality” plaguing Bollywood. According to the filmmaker, everyone is racing to replicate what already works — and that’s where the problem lies.

“Pushpa works — suddenly 20 films try the same. A horror-comedy hits — and now everyone wants one,” he said in a candid chat with Bollywood Hungama. He believes these successes aren’t because of genre formulas, but because they were unique when they arrived.

“I don’t want to build a ‘spy universe’ or ‘cop universe,’” he added. “My universe is cinema itself. I want to tell stories — not follow trends.”

Karan, who recently produced Homebound, which premiered at Cannes, emphasized the need for fresh thought. His words serve as a wake-up call to Bollywood: stop chasing trends, start telling truthfully original stories.
