Sebastian from The Little Mermaid is indeed a fan favourite, but also is he intended to become a crab or a lobster? And that is how Disney has muddled the situation.

Is Sebastian from The Little Mermaid a crab or a lobster, but how has Disney muddled the issue? Prior to the debut of The Little Mermaid in 1989, Disney used to have a string of significant disappointments, including the animated picture The Black Cauldron and gloomy live-action films such as The Watcher In The Woods and Something Wicked This Way Leads. The Little Mermaid aided in the righting of the ship, ushering in a period known as the “Disney Renaissance.”

The Little Mermaid is modelled on the same-named Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, however, the source fairy tale is much darker than Disney’s adaptation. Ariel, a mermaid princess who desires to escape her undersea kingdom and then become human, fights over her overly protective father King Triton as well as strikes a pact with the sea witch Ursula to stroll on earth. Because of its stunning animation, excellent musical moments, and amusing plot, The Little Mermaid received immediate recognition. This would take home two Academy Awards, including one for composer Alan Menken for Best Original Score.

The Little Mermaid had numerous memorable musical moments, notably the foot-tapping “Under The Sea,” which won the film its second Academy Award nomination. Sebastian, Trition’s adviser and court composer, performs this. Sebastian has been one of Disney’s most amusing sidekicks, but the debate over whether he’s a crab or a lobster has caused unnecessary confusion well over years.

While parts of Sebastian’s characteristics resemble those of a lobster, he is unmistakably a crab, as noted several times in The Little Mermaid. This contains the moment in which the crazy Chef Louis alludes to Sebastian as a crab, which he should understand as an expert.

However, Disney products, besides an official plush toy alluding towards the figure as “Sebastian the Lobster,” has muddied the waters of an argument.

Sebastian also appeared inside the 2000 sequel Return To The Sea as well as the 2008 prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, in parallel to The Little Mermaid. He also appeared inside the Kingdom Hearts games and made a small appearance in Aladdin. Within 1989 film and much of his subsequent appearances, Samuel E. Wright voiced the crab, but Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs will take up the part in Disney’s upcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

Rob Marshall will direct the film, with Halle Bailey (Grown-ish) playing Ariel, Javier Bardem portraying King Triton, and Awkwafina portraying seagull Scuttle.
