As per The Hollywood Reporter, Anna Paquin, Jake Lacy, Colin Hanks, as well as Lio Tipton are scheduled to star in the limited series, which will then be produced by Universal Content Productions and directed by Nick Antosca (The Act). Anna Paquin has been cast as Mary Ann Broberg, a mother of three who later learns she ignored warning signs and made a fatal mistake by getting too close to her charming neighbour, Robert Berchtold, and putting her oldest daughter, Jan, in his care.
A Friend of the Family is based on the true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by their neighbour and charismatic, obsessed family friend. THR reports, “The Brobergs, devoted to their faith, family, and community, were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbour used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them. This is the story of how their lives were permanently altered and how they survived.”
Robert, a businessman, Mormon parent, spouse, and skilful manipulator that arranges the kidnapping of Mary Ann’s daughter Jan, would allegedly be played by Jake Lacy. Mary Ann’s husband, Bob Broberg, will be played by Colin Hanks, and he begins to suspect that something is wrong with their next-door neighbour.
Gail Berchtold, Robert’s wife as well as the mother of a big family, will indeed be played by Lio Tipton, who could never have predicted what her husband would finally accomplish.
Eliza Hittman will direct numerous episodes, including the pilot, while Alex Hedlund will serve as executive producer with showrunner and writer Nick Antosca. Both Jan Broberg and Mary Ann Broberg will produce.
