Dalit female journalists ‘Writing With Fire’, Nomination for an Oscar

On Tuesday evening, the Academy Awards unveiled the final list of nominations for the 94th edition. Writing With Fire, an Indian documentary, was the only Indian film to earn a nomination. Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan revealed the nominations digitally on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Twitter feed.

Newcomers Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh directed the film Writing With Fire. The film follows the journey of Khabar Lahariya, India’s only Dalit women-run newspaper.

The film follows a group of ambitious Dalit women lead by Meera, their top reporter, as they transition from print to digital in order to keep current with changing times.

Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Summer of Soul are among the other candidates in the category (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).

On March 27, the event will be broadcast on television.
