Saoirse Ronan, who starred in Lady Bird and Little Women, is scheduled to star in The Outrun, a new film directed by Nora Fingscheidt and based on Amy Liptrot’s best-selling novel. The book was adapted for the film by Fingscheidt and Liptrot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ronan will portray Rona, a woman fresh out of rehab who returns to Scotland’s rugged Orkney Islands and the sheep farm of her youth after more than a decade away, in the adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling novel of the same name.
Liptrot’s book, which was a Sunday Times top ten bestseller, was awarded the Wainwright Prize in 2016 as well as the PEN Ackerley Prize in 2017. The book has been translated into 15 languages, with over 110,000 copies sold inside the United Kingdom alone. On behalf of James Macdonald Lockhart of Antony Harwood Ltd, Rebecca Watson of VHA negotiated the movie agreement for the novel.
The Outrun has been optioned by Sarah Brocklehurst’s Brock Media, which will produce the feature with Ronan, Jack Lowden, and Dominic Norris under their new brand Arcade Pictures, as well as Mogambo’s Ignacio Salazar-Simpson and Ricardo Marco Budé. Weydemann Bros. of Germany’s Jonas Weydemann and Jakob D. Weydemann will co-produce alongside BBC Film and Screen Scotland, which funded the project’s development. The protagonist is the executive producer and has secured funding
Fingscheidt’s debut feature, System Crasher, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2019, receiving the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize and eight Lolas, including best film and best director for Fingscheidt. The Unforgivable, starring Sandra Bullock, was Fingscheidt’s English-language follow-up, a film version of a U.K. TV series about a woman navigating her release after 20 years in jail.
