Recently, it has become popular by becoming the second-largest movie-producing nation which is around 2,500 films in a single year. Let’s take a look at what exactly is Nollywood.

Nollywood is the film industry in Nigeria (Country in Africa) and is the second-largest movie industry globally – in terms of output, producing about 2,500 films in a year. Talking about this no. which is more than the Hollywood and is ranked in the second position to India’s Bollywood. Nollywood came into notice when a New York Times journalist, Norimitsu Onishi identified and came with the term in the year 2002. So exactly what happened was that when he visited Nigeria at that time Norimitsu noticed a ton of activities related to filmmaking happening in Lagos, Nigeria. However, Nollywood is doesn’t bring in as much as revenue when compared with Hollywood or Bollywood, but it’s known for producing huge no. of films despite having limited resources.

Earlier Nollywood was known to produce videos of home production quality. But now moving forward with time Nigerian movie industry has significantly improved its craft as the industry is now known for its comedies and dramas. Apart from Dramas and comedies, it has entered into the genres like Horror, Musical, and animations as well. With time Nollywood will definitely ace its name in different fields of genres as well apart from producing more no. of films.

Coming into existence

In the middle of the 20th century, in 1957 Fincho became the first film to be shot in color. After almost 30 years in 1984, Wale Adenuga’s Papa Ajasco became the first blockbuster and one of the largest cinematic events in Nigeria. The movie was a blockbuster that grossed about 61,000 nairas in just a span of three days. But until the year 1900, Nollywood didn’t emerge as the path-breaker film industry that we know today. None the less Nollywood we do more and will emerge as a game-changer.
