Whenever I decided to watch Saturday Night Live one evening in April, I was already sleepy. Emma Stone was indeed the host that night, while BTS was the musical guest. Despite having millions of fans worldwide, three Billboard 200 chart-topping singles, and a recent appearance at the United Nations, I knew very little about the seven-member South Korean quintet. I witnessed a lot of love on Twitter, but also a lot of mocking thrown towards BTS and their fans. I had never heard a BTS song until Stone announced the first musical break, despite the fact that I knew they would have been the first K-pop artist to perform on SNL.
As the lights rose up to reveal seven figures in black suits with a variety of hair colours, oh whoa ooh whoa background voices floated in, and a teasing bass rhythm began, the lights went up to reveal seven figures—their backs to the camera—in dark suits and an assortment of hair colours. They whirled around and rocked from side to side. Then the person with the pink hair began to sing.
You can see BTS sing their breezy pop confection “Boy With Luv” on YouTube, where it currently has 21 million views, making it by far the most successful musical appearance SNL has ever published. You may enjoy it or it may not be your cup of tea. This might not be your thing, but there’s something about BTS that interests you, whether it’s their synchrony, their nice looks, or the fact they sing as well as rap live while dancing. Or how, towards the end of the song, the boys extend their hands to the audience, grinning and bowing as shouts drown out their thank-yous.
I wasn’t a big fan of BTS before that night. I chose to discover their names after witnessing them play “Boy With Luv” and their 2018 smash “Mic Drop.” After a week, I was able to tell you that BTS’s leader is 24-year-old RM, who learned English by watching Friends.
