After the COVID epidemic, Vivek Agnihotri reported that Lata Mangeshkar committed to record a folk song for ‘The Kashmir Files.’

The Kashmir Files, the newest movie by Vivek Agnihotri, has shattered all box office records. The film, which is based upon that flight of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley during the 1990s, has broken the Rs. 200 crore mark there at the box office in just 10 days, outperforming all previous releases. Do you know that Lata Mangeshkar, the late great singer, consented to record a song for The Kashmir Files? That’s right, you read that correctly. Lata was said to have promised Vivek that she would sing a folk song for such a movie.

Vivek Agnihotri had disclosed in an early interview with ETimes TV that he sought Lata Mangeshkar to sing a song for the film that he had recorded from a Kashmiri vocalist. Lata decided to sing a folk song since she was good friends with Pallavi Joshi, who had a major part in the film. According to reports, the filmmaker said, “Kashmir Files doesn’t have any songs, it is a tragic, epic drama but it is also a tribute to the genocide victims. I actually recorded a folk song from a Kashmiri singer and we wanted Lata didi to sing that. She had stopped singing for films and had retired but we requested her. She was close to Pallavi (Joshi) and she agreed to sing for our movie.”

Because Kashmir is so dear to Lata Mangeshkar’s heart, Vivek Agnihotri pledged to record the song after the COVID epidemic. He also said that the singer was not permitted to go to studios in the aftermath of the epidemic, so they were all eager to record with her. His goal of working with the ‘Nightingale of India’ was dashed when he learned of her terrible death.

For the uninitiated, Lata Mangeshkar died of multi-organ failure on February 6, this year. She was 92 years old at the time. At Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, the iconic singer was put to rest with full state honours.
