Anil Kapoor says Sonam bought her first flat from her own savings
Anil Kapoor recalls how Sonam bought her first home with her own savings after assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali and breaking through in Saawariya.

Anil Kapoor has shared a rare family story ahead of the next episode of India Ke Top 1% – The Anil Kapoor Show, and it is less about stardom than about a very grounded first: daughter Sonam Kapoor bought her first home with her own savings.
The flat that was entirely her own
In a conversation with Anupamaa star Rupali Ganguly, the two actors were discussing the idea that every woman should have a corner of the world that belongs to her alone. Anil used the moment to recall Sonam’s early career.
Speaking about the purchase, Anil remembered that she paid for the home with her own earnings rather than relying on him. “Mujhe kharidne ki zaroorat hi nahi padi,” Anil shared — “I didn’t have to buy it for her.”
The timeline he described was simple and earned:
- She returned after studying in Singapore.
- She worked as an assistant to Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
- Bhansali gave her the acting break in Saawariya (2007).
- She saved little by little and bought the flat herself.
Why that detail matters
Star kids often face the assumption that their milestones are handed to them. Sonam’s first flat, by Anil’s account, was not. She was part of Bhansali’s team before she was a leading actor, working as an assistant director on Black and later debuting opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Saawariya.
That small detail reframes the familiar narrative: before the film career took over, she had already put aside enough from her own earnings to secure a space of her own. It is a warm, no-fuss reminder that financial independence can begin early, even inside a famous family.

The episode with Rupali Ganguly airs this weekend at 8 PM on Star Plus and JioHotstar, and the show’s Play Along experience invites viewers to take part alongside the guests. For anyone who follows the Kapoors as closely as their films, this is the kind of personal note worth catching.
