Salman Khan Says Karan Johar Feared Him Because of Shah Rukh Khan
On Koffee With Karan Season 9's premiere, Salman Khan joked that Karan Johar's nerves trace back to his old equation with Shah Rukh Khan.

Koffee With Karan returned for its ninth season on October 14, and Salman Khan used the very first couch session to reopen one of Bollywood’s longest-running storylines. Sitting across from host Karan Johar, Salman suggested Karan’s nerves around him may have less to do with Karan and more to do with Shah Rukh Khan.
Karan admitted that, even after years of knowing Salman, the nervousness has not really gone away. “No one gets me more stressed, nervous, and hyper than you,” he said. Salman, in response, kept it simple: everything has been good for a long time.
The conversation then slipped into the past. Salman said that at one point the equation was not good, and he could have understood if Karan was scared of him because of Shah Rukh. Karan laughed the suggestion off, but the line immediately brought back the two Khans’ old chapter for viewers.
The 2008 story behind the couch moment
For younger fans, the history goes back to July 2008. Salman and Shah Rukh reportedly had a major disagreement at Katrina Kaif’s birthday celebration in Mumbai, reportedly over comments about their shows Dus Ka Dum and Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain. Reports also suggest the situation escalated after a comment involving Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Karan was among the guests at the party and is said to have left with Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan after the incident. That specific detail is why Salman’s couch-side comment carried extra weight.
- July 2008: The reported Salman–Shah Rukh fallout happens at Katrina Kaif’s birthday.
- October 14, 2026: Koffee With Karan Season 9 opens with Salman as the first guest.
- The couch moment: Salman traces Karan’s nerves to his old Shah Rukh equation; Karan denies it.
Why the exchange matters
Koffee With Karan often works best when old equations share the couch with new promotions. This episode gave viewers both: Salman’s return as a guest and a direct reference to a friendship that has been one of the most talked-about relationships in modern Bollywood.
The moment is already being read as a playful dig rather than a serious accusation. Karan’s on-camera reaction was light, and Salman framed the comment with reassurance: the current equation is calm, and the stress belongs to another time.
It also places Shah Rukh Khan at the centre of a conversation he was not present for. That is classic KWK territory: a third person becomes the emotional pivot between host and guest. Here, the third person is a star whose bond with Salman has been watched, debated and celebrated by an entire generation of fans.
For viewers tuning in, the takeaway is simple. Karan Johar may still feel nervous around Salman, but Salman says the old reason no longer applies. The show has addressed its own tension, smiled at it, and moved on, leaving the audience with a familiar moment of candour.
