RIP Lata Mangeshkar: State govt declares a public holiday on February 7th

On February 7, the Maharashtra government declared a public holiday to commemorate the demise of legendary vocalist Lata Mangeshkar. Lata Mangeshkar, who died on February 6 morning after multiple organ failure, will be remembered with a two-day “state mourning.” On January 8, 2022, she was hospitalised to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital for treatment after testing positive for COVID-19.

According to reports, the federal government has declared a two-day national mourning period in honour of the famous vocalist Lata Mangeshkar. As a gesture of respect, India’s national flag will be flown at half-mast for two days, from February 6 to February 7. On Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m., the late Bharat Ratna winner will be given a state funeral at Shivaji Park. The state funeral will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to reports,

The West Bengal government has declared a half-day vacation on Monday, according to sources. They’ve also asked the governor’s office to play the singer’s songs over the next 15 days at key crossings around the state.

According to PTI, Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that they had made preparations “Lata Mangeshkar’s funeral required 25 kilogrammes of sandalwood, as well as other items. For the burial, approximately 2,000 square feet of the park’s space has been blocked.”

Apart from Maharashtra politicians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the state burial in Mumbai on Sunday.
