Ram Gopal Varma faces Rs 29.67 crore legal notice

Eclatant Films has demanded Rs 29.67 crore from Ram Gopal Varma and warned producers and OTT platforms to secure an NOC before any deal.

Ram Gopal Varma faces Rs 29.67 crore legal notice

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is in the middle of a public financial dispute after Eclatant Films Private Limited issued a notice demanding that he clear claimed dues of Rs 29.67 crore. The public notice, published in the 24 and 31 October 2026 issues of Atul Mohan’s Complete Cinema magazine, also warns producers, distributors, broadcasters and streaming platforms against dealing with the director without a written no-objection certificate.

What the notice claims

Eclatant Films says it sent a legal notice to Ram Gopal Varma on October 15, 2026, calling on him to pay Rs 29,67,64,000. According to the company, that amount includes accumulated interest of Rs 11,38,92,000. The claim stems from an agreement dated April 10, 2010, and the production house has also pointed to a Bombay High Court order passed on April 17, 2013.

The notice gives the filmmaker until October 30, 2026, to settle the amount. If he does not, Eclatant says it will assert a contractual lien over his share, rights, interests, revenues and exploitation rights in the films and projects covered by the agreement.

Why this matters beyond RGV

The warning is aimed squarely at the wider industry. Eclatant Films has cautioned individuals and entities that plan to acquire, license, distribute, broadcast, stream or otherwise exploit rights connected with projects within the agreement’s scope.

Under the agreement as described in the notice, Ram Gopal Varma must obtain a prior written NOC before taking up film production, co-production, direction or writing work until the dues are cleared. Third parties that proceed without that clearance would, the notice says, act at their own risk.

  • Search for an NOC before signing any rights deal linked to an RGV project covered by the 2010 agreement.
  • Track the October 30 deadline, after which Eclatant says it may enforce its contractual lien.
  • Prepare for legal remedies such as injunctions, recovery proceedings and enforcement of contractual security rights.

What changes for platforms and producers

The arithmetic is worth noting: the interest component of Rs 11.38 crore is a significant slice of the total demand, which means the principal being claimed is roughly Rs 18.29 crore. That matters because a buyer looking at an RGV project now has to check not only the filmmaker’s current contracts but also older agreements that may still carry rights claims.

For OTT platforms, independent producers and broadcasters, the practical takeaway is due diligence. A deal that looks ready to sign may still need a written NOC if the project falls within the 2010 agreement, and Eclatant has made clear it will treat a missing NOC as a risk for the other party.

What comes next

The public notice is more than a private demand; it is a signal that Eclatant may move to formal enforcement if the payment does not land. For fans, the immediate question is whether this affects upcoming Ram Gopal Varma titles. Until the dues are settled or a court intervenes, any project covered by the agreement will carry an extra clearance requirement.
