Neelakanti Patekar cleared IIT, won 1973 gold, returned in Chhaava

After Nana Patekar's death, the spotlight turns to his wife Neelakanti: IIT entrance, 1973 theatre gold and a Chhaava comeback.

Neelakanti Patekar's IIT-to-theatre journey, and a Chhaava return

Nana Patekar’s death in Goa on Thursday has brought one of Indian cinema’s most fiercely guarded private lives back into the conversation. The actor died in the early hours after a cardiac arrest at his residence. As fans revisit his filmography, another story is finally getting attention: the life and career of his wife, Neelakanti Patekar.

A private marriage, from Marathi theatre to a 1978 wedding

The two reportedly met through Marathi theatre, when Neelakanti was working as a bank officer and exploring acting. Their friendship grew into a relationship, and they married in 1978 — back when Nana was still working his way up in the industry.

Their marriage had happy years, but it also carried a deep loss. The couple’s first child died at two and a half years old. They later welcomed a second son, Malhar. Over the years, Nana said, the relationship changed, and they eventually began living separately while remaining married.

“Neelkanti and I shared numerous years of happiness together. We supported each other through thick and thin. But, over the years, we developed certain irreconcilable differences and grew apart. Today, we continue to be married but stay separately.”

Nana gave that account in an interview reported by The Indian Express.

Cleared the IIT entrance, picked theatre instead

Neelakanti was born in Pune and grew up moving between cities because her father, who worked in the Central Excise Department, was transferred often. She studied Physics. At her father’s urging, she took the IIT entrance examination — and cleared it. But she did not take that path; she chose theatre, a decision that defined her career.

  • 1973: Won the Gold Medal for Best Actress at the Maharashtra State Drama Competition.
  • 1978: Married Nana Patekar after meeting him through Marathi theatre.
  • 1989: Starred opposite Sachin Pilgaonkar in Aatm Vishwas and won the Maharashtra State Government’s Best Actress award.
  • Later: Returned to the screen in Chhaava as Dharau.

Why her Chhaava return matters now

After years away from acting, Neelakanti returned in Chhaava, the historical drama featuring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna. She played Dharau. The comeback shifted the way audiences see her: not only as Nana Patekar’s wife, but as a performer with her own awards, her own choices and her own stage legacy.

For Bollywood fans, the timing matters. At a moment when the industry is remembering Nana, this quieter parallel career is a reminder that the people behind the stars often have substantial stories of their own.
