Madhuri Dixit’s husband knew only Amitabh Bachchan at reception
Dr Shriram Nene told Farah Khan he grew up on Spielberg and Star Wars, not Hindi films, so at his own Bollywood wedding reception only one face looked familiar.

Dr Shriram Nene has lived one of Bollywood’s great outsider stories. A cardiovascular surgeon in Los Angeles, he married Madhuri Dixit when she was one of the most famous women in India — and, by his own admission, he had no idea what that meant.
Appearing on Farah Khan’s cooking vlog, Dr Nene revisited the love story with an easy candour that has made the clip a talking point. The couple met in the US, dated for about three months and decided to get married. The grand film-industry reception was another matter entirely.
A prom king surrounded by strangers
Dr Nene said he felt “like Prom King” — waving warmly at guests he did not know, then only making sense of the evening later through the wedding album.
“The only person I knew was Amitabh Bachchan because I had seen Amar Akbar Anthony.”
When Farah Khan asked whether he recognised Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan, he said he did not.
Why the story still charms
Madhuri was at the centre of Indian cinema in 1999, and Farah reminded him that the relationship was the biggest news in the Indian film industry — one that broke many hearts. Dr Nene’s confession is a reminder that stardom is only obvious if you are inside the culture watching it.
- He grew up on Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Star Wars, not Hindi films.
- He did not speak Hindi and was living in Los Angeles when they met.
- The couple kept their relationship quiet before marrying at Madhuri’s brother’s house in the US.
From Southern California to Mumbai
Madhuri married Dr Nene on October 17, 1999, in a private ceremony in Southern California. She then moved to the US and paused acting to raise their sons Arin and Ryan. The family returned to India in 2011, and Madhuri gradually picked up films and television again.
Nearly three decades on, the prom-king memory reads less like a gaffe and more like a sweet postcard from the moment Bollywood’s biggest star chose someone outside the bubble.
