In honour of Lata Mangeshkar, Madhya Pradesh to plan a music academy

The state government of Madhya Pradesh announced on Monday that a music academy and museum will be established in Indore, the birthplace of famous musician Lata Mangeshkar. In Indore, a memorial to the singer will be erected. In addition, on the occasion of the late Lata Mangeshkar’s birth anniversary, a state prize will be named after her and handed to performers.

The announcement came a day after the famed singer died of multiple organ failure at a Mumbai hospital on Sunday.

On September 28, 1929, she was born in a neighbourhood near a Gurudwara in Indore. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, recalled a chat with singer Lata Mangeshkar in 2017, in which she expressed her desire to join in the Narmada Seva Yatra but was unable to due to her health.

The CM, who is known in his state as ‘Mama,’ further remarked that “(Lata Mangeshkar) is a Madhya Pradesh native, and we are all proud of her. With her wonderful melodies, she will always be with us. The government of Madhya Pradesh has chosen to name a college after Lata Mangeshkar, as well as a museum and a musical institution, in her hometown of Indore “Chouhan said.

The state government on Sunday announced a two-day state mourning as a mark of respect for the legendary singer.
