How does Bollywood affect society?

Bollywood movies are thought to have an impact on Indian society since the general public can relate to them. Some experts, but on the other hand, argue that they just portray people’s preferred interpretation of reality.

Everlasting love, joy, profound despair, and severe obstacles are all part of the human experience. Bollywood films often put couples’ love and willingness to sacrifice to the test. Bollywood films take the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, however, because they are basically fairytales, happy endings are always anticipated and provided.

M. Madhaya Prasad, a film professor in Hyderabad, is bothered by this: “People and society are influenced by our movies. However, they represent a reality that is not the same as the viewers’ reality.”

Indian society is very hierarchical, and despite the fact that the caste system was abolished in the 1950 constitution, caste prejudice persists across the country.

Even while society has been more open and tolerant ever since the beginning of the 1990s as just a result of economic success and educational improvement, it is not as easy as it appears inside the movies to remove obstacles between individuals from various backgrounds who love one another.

Only a small percentage of India’s 1.2 billion people reside in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai. According to the 2011 census, two-thirds of Indians live in rural regions and rely on agriculture for their livelihood. 90 per cent of marriages are all still planned, as per UNICEF figures from 2012. Even though many weddings in cities are founded on love, they are still planned by a couple’s family. Hindus, who make up 80% of the population, are still seldom married to Muslims, who make up 16% of the population.

These taboos have been addressed in Bollywood movies including “Bombay” (1995), “Gadar” (Revolt, 2001), “Veer Zaara” (Veer and Zara, 2004), and “Jodhaa Akhbar” (Jodhaa and Akbar, 2008). Shah Rukh Khan as well as Saif Ali Khan, both Muslim actors, are idols since they have married Hindu ladies in real life.
