The Mumbai Police have filed a chargesheet against choreographer Ganesh Acharya in a 2020 case that was brought by a co-dancer after he was accused of sexual harassment, stalking, and voyeurism. The chargesheet was recently filed in a metropolitan magistrate court in the city’s suburbs, according to a recent story in Hindustan Times. The matter is being handled by Mumbai’s Oshiwara Police Station.
Ganesh Acharya and his assistant have been charged with sexual harassment, voyeurism, stalking, 509 (insulting the modesty of any woman), 323 (causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention to commit an offence), according to the report.
The well-known Bollywood choreographer is said to have declined to comment on the recent news. Ravi Suryavanshi, his lawyer, told Hindustan Times, “I don’t have the charge sheet so I cannot say anything, but all the sections in the FIR were bailable.”
The dancer revealed in her police report that she had apparently rebuffed down the choreographer’s sexual approaches. Ganesh Acharya was also accused of touching her, making obscene remarks, and even showing her pornographic material. She informed HT that Acharya allegedly told her in May 2019 that she needed to have physical relations with her in order to succeed in the industry. Her membership in the Indian Film and Television Choreographers Association was supposedly revoked after she refused for six months.
The woman also claims that Acharya’s assistants assaulted her.
