Director Anil Sharma’s blockbuster Gadar- Ek Prem Katha completed 20 years on June 15 this year. The film had Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the lead roles. The story revolves around the time of the India-Pakistan partition. The love story between a Sikh man and a Muslim woman was quite gripping.
All these years there were assumptions that Govinda and Kajol were the initial choices for the movie. On the 20th anniversary of the movie, Anil Sharma refuted the rumors. As per the director the role was never offered to Govinda. The story of the film was narrated to Govinda by Anil Sharma. At that time Anil was directing Govinda’s “Maharaja”. Govinda was scared when he heard the story. The actor did not believe that someone can pull off a film like Gadar – Ek Prem Katha.
According to Anil Sharma, Sunny was always the first choice for the movie. However, the director clarified that he had considered many other actresses for the role of “Sakina”. Ultimately, when nothing materialized, Ameesha Patel was signed.
