J. P. Dutta helmed, produced, as well as wrote the 1997 Indian Bollywood epic war movie Border. This is an adaption of true events that took place during the Battle of Longewala in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War. Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Sudesh Berry, Puneet Issar, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda appear in the movie. In secondary roles, Tabu, Raakhee, Pooja Bhatt, as well as Sharbani Mukherjee appear.

Dutta’s ideal venture was Border. He started writing the script for the movie in September 1995 as well as finished it in April 1996. The majority of the movie was filmed in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Jodhpur was also used for several scenes. Sonu Nigam and Roop Kumar Rathod’s song “Sandese Aate Hai,” from the movie, were among the most successful Hindi songs. Because of the song’s success, numerous filmmakers approached Nigam about singing in their movies’ songs. The tracks’ words were written by Javed Akhtar, whereas the music was composed by Anu Malik. Hariharan sang the song “Mere Dushman Mere Bhai.”

The film has received favourable critical praise for its plot, execution, scope, displaying off the fight, director, script, acting, and music when it was released globally on June 13, 1997.

Box Office India called it an all-time blockbuster when it premiered to great box office numbers, with an aggregate domestic net total of $394 million (US$5.5 million). This was also the highest-grossing Hindi language movie of 1997 in India, and it was the second-highest-grossing movie of the year globally, trailing only Dil To Pagal Hai. Border made a total of US$655.7 million (US$9.2 million) globally. Several prizes were given to the movie at various award ceremonies.

There at 43rd Filmfare Awards, it garnered 11 nominations, comprising Best Film, Best Actor for Sunny Deol, Best Supporting Actor for Suniel Shetty as well as Akshaye Khanna, and Best Supporting Actress for Raakhee, and won four of them, notably Best Male Debut for Akshaye Khanna. Also, it received three National Film Awards, including Best Film on National Integration, Best Lyricist for Javed Akhtar, and Best Male Playback Singer.

The Indian Directorate of Film Festivals as well as the Ministry of Defence jointly presented the Independence Day Film Festival on August 15, 2017, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of India’s independence. The movie was screened retrospectively because of its continued cult classic popularity and accomplishment of 20 years.
