Bhagyashree has been married for more than thirty years, but a tiny wedding detail still gets her talking: her shaadi ki mehendi. In a January conversation with Hauterrfly, the Maine Pyar Kiya star said she cared less about her bridal outfit than about keeping the henna on her hands — and she kept it going for a full year.
Her one condition for the wedding
Bhagyashree married businessman and producer Himalay Dassani in 1990, soon after Maine Pyar Kiya turned her into a household name. She told her mother-in-law that the saree could be chosen without her input. Her only request, she recalled, was “I just want mehendi on my hands.”
If the design started to fade, the mehendi artist was called back. When that was not possible, Bhagyashree did it herself, sitting with a bowl of mehendi and reworking the pattern with a toothpick. “Toothpick se khud hi mehendi laga deti,” she said, laughing at the memory.
Why the detail feels so fresh
Modern celebrity weddings are usually sold as carefully styled productions: designer outfits, choreographed entries, endless content. Bhagyashree’s story cuts the other way. The saree was unimportant to her; the mehendi was non-negotiable. That makes the anecdote feel warm and personal rather than curated.
It also flips the usual bridal narrative. Instead of a look created for photographs, hers was a small ritual she actively maintained for 365 days. The persistence turned a fleeting wedding symbol into a quiet promise.
A family that followed her into show business
Bhagyashree and Himalay have two children, both now working in entertainment. A quick snapshot:
- Abhimanyu Dassani debuted in Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2019) and won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
- Avantika Dassani made her debut in the 2022 psychological series Mithya, which also starred Huma Qureshi, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rajit Kapur and Samir Soni.
Last year, Bhagyashree shared another marriage memory: Himalay had never formally proposed, so he surprised her mid-photoshoot by going down on one knee. She posted candid frames and joked that he had finally done it after all these years. It is the same thread that runs through the mehendi story — a long marriage built on small, steady gestures.
The mehendi detail may be decades old, but it is exactly the kind of slice-of-life memory that keeps her in the celebrity conversation without a new release on the calendar.
