Asin’s 9-Year-Old Speaks 12 Languages With Zero Screen Time
Rahul Sharma says daughter Arin, 9, speaks around 12 languages and has never had TV or mobile screen time - books fill the house instead.

Asin became a household name with Ghajini in 2008 and later hits like Ready and Housefull 2. She married Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma in 2016 and quietly stepped away from the industry after All Is Well in 2015. Now a rare interview with Rahul has put the family back in the spotlight for a different reason: how they are raising their daughter.
A screen-free childhood by design
Rahul said the couple’s daughter Arin, now nine, has never been given television or mobile screen time. “No television or mobile phones. We only have books at home,” he said in the interview. He credited Asin for that decision, calling her “the rock behind me” and saying her contribution to his life is more than he can explain.
12 languages before the age of ten
That environment, Rahul said, has helped Arin build a striking ability with words. She can understand and speak around 12 languages, including Korean, Japanese, Thai and Chinese. He joked that he struggles with even two languages.
Arin is in Class 2, but the family already keeps books for Classes 8 and 9 at home. Rahul often jokes about letting her sit for the Class 10 board exam, before adding that the credit belongs to Asin.
Why this resonates now
For many Indian families, the easiest quiet moment is a phone or tablet placed in a child’s hands. Asin and Rahul chose the opposite: a home where books outnumber screens. This does not mean every parent must ban devices, but it is a reminder that early screen boundaries are possible even in celebrity households with busy schedules.
A recent Onam picture from Asin added to the impression. Her husband and daughter were busy making a pookalam, not drifting toward separate screens.
What parents can borrow
- Swap one daily screen slot for reading aloud or family conversation.
- Keep books visible and easy to reach, not packed away in a cupboard.
- Focus on attention and connection first, not on expecting every child to learn 12 languages.
The larger lesson is not about producing a prodigy. It is about deciding, as a family, what kind of environment you want to create at home – and then protecting that space together.
