Afghanistan crisis: Celebrities express solidarity with the nation

The Taliban have seized the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul, on Sunday, August 15. Tensions across the nation have escalated to a point where the world is concerned about the future of Afghanistan. Visuals of empty streets and crowded airports have left the world heartbroken. Many Bollywood celebrities namely Rhea Chakraborty, Sonal Chauhan, Sonu Sood, Armaan Malik, Kangana Ranaut, Swara Bhasker, among others have expressed their concern and fear over the grim situation on their official social media handles.

Rhea Chakraborty posted a story on her Instagram handle, expressing her sorrow over the condition of women in Afghanistan. Using the hashtag #Smashthepatriarchy, the actress wrote, “While women around the globe fight for pay parity, women in Afghanistan are being sold – They have become the pay. Heartbroken to see the condition of women and minorities in Afghanistan. Urge the global leaders to stand up to this! Women are human too.”

“While we celebrate independence here, some people lost their freedom and more. Deeply worried and concerned about the people, especially women and kids in Afghanistan. My heart bleeds. In moments of such helplessness, I wish I had the power to do something,” added actress Sonal Chauhan.

Singer Armaan Malik wrote, “It’s sad to see all that’s happening in #Afghanistan at the moment. My prayers and thoughts are with their people.”

Bhumi Pednekar also shared that she is heartbroken by the current situation in Afganistan. The actress wrote, “This is so heartbreaking. It gives me shivers down my spine. Murder, rape and complete breakdown of democracy ‘#PrayForAfghanistan.”

Veere Di Wedding actress Swara Bhaskar shared a painting of a woman surrounded by the Taliban’s and wrote, ”Afghan graffiti artist @ShamsiaHassani saying it all! The Afghan people have been thrown to the wolves. Women esp. #Taliban are monstrous in their brutal exercise of force and power. They are murderers & misogynists; their ideology is one of hate & violence & that won’t change.”

Television actor Karan Tacker also shared a note that read, “Devastated looking at the state of women in Afghanistan, shame on humanity. while the world just sits and watches this in silence.”

“Afghanistan Stay Strong. The whole world is praying for you,” wrote actor Sonu Sood.

Tisca Chopra shared a throwback picture from her childhood days in Kabul and expressed her grief over the situation.

Taking to Twitter, Shekhar Kapur wrote, “Special prayer for the people of Afghanistan. A nation wrecked and destroyed by the colonial ambitions of foreign powers. #Afganistan.”
