Street Fighter’s India opening week ends at Rs 7.50 crore

The live-action Street Fighter closed its first India week at Rs 7.50 crore gross, trailing Mortal Kombat 2 and needing stronger word of mouth ahead.

Street Fighter wraps India week one at Rs 7.50 crore

Street Fighter’s Indian box office story is a case of a familiar title meeting a crowded market and not yet breaking through. The live-action martial arts film, which released on October 16, finished its first week with an estimated Rs 7.50 crore gross in India.

That places it behind Mortal Kombat 2, a comparable video-game-to-screen action franchise, in the opening-week window. For a title with a global fan base and an Indian action star in the marketing, the result is muted.

The Vidyut Jammwal factor

Vidyut Jammwal’s presence was visible in the film’s marketing assets, which should have helped connect with Indian action audiences. Yet trade tracking suggests the movie could not generate much curiosity among Indian audiences. Had the word of mouth been superlative, the opening week would likely have looked slightly better.

This is not a verdict on the cast or director. It is a reminder that a known face in posters and promos does not automatically convert to footfalls, especially when the film’s genre has to fight for attention in India.

The film and the fight ahead

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter follows Ryu and Ken Masters, whose friendship is strained after a tragic incident involving their mentor, Gouken. Six years later, they are drawn into the second World Warrior tournament run by M. Bison, while Chun-Li seeks revenge for her father’s death.

The cast includes Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Roman Reigns, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Andrew Schulz, Eric André, Vidyut Jammwal, Orville Peck, Don Lee and 50 Cent.

What to watch next

Week two is the test. The film needs better trends ahead and good growth to have a chance in India. For fans, the practical markers are simple:

  • Watch how strongly the film holds in urban multiplexes.
  • Track whether the opening-week gap with Mortal Kombat 2 narrows.
  • Note if fan communities begin recommending it through word of mouth.

The reported collections are trade estimates, which means final figures could differ once certified accounting statements arrive.
