Captain Kabir Kaul, a young former army officer, agrees to teach at his late father’s school, the Wular Public Institution, because the school would close if no teacher is available. At school, he discovers a journal left inside the desk drawer by his previous teacher, Firdaus Quadri. Upon discovering that a new teacher has come, children begin to arrive at school. Yet, they defy Kabir, causing him to believe that he is incapable of teaching; nevertheless, upon reading Firdaus’ diary, he gets confidence and decides to give it a shot.
Kabir has a falling out with his fiancée, who is having an affair and feels that Kabir is no longer fit to marry her because he has left the army. He is devastated, but he finds consolation in the schoolchildren and Firdaus’ notebook, which he writes comments in. He hears about Imran, one of the students, whose father, Yakub, prefers that he work around the house rather than attend school. Kabir is able to return Imran to school with the assistance of the journal. After finding that Firdaus is getting married, he intends to burn her journal, but later rescues it in a moment of insight.
Firdaus discovers on her wedding day that her fiancé has been cheating on her and that the other lady is expecting his child. She cancels the wedding and returns to Wular Public School. Despite Kabir’s absence, the children are happy to see her return. She discovers her journal in the exact drawer where she had put it a year earlier and reads Kabir’s comments. He had claimed that he was in love with the writer and that her diaries had taught him vital things. Firdaus, intrigued, inquires of the principal about Kabir in the same manner he inquired about her. The principal informs her that he has left to attend a teaching course.
Firdaus encounters Yakub one day, who wants to reclaim Imran. Imran notices Kabir and rushes over to him, stating that he does not want to leave the school. Yakub confronts Kabir with a gun, and Imran, fearful that Yakub would kill his father, snatches the gun and shoots him. Kabir pulls him aside and asks him not to do so. Yakub acknowledges his error and moves on from the situation. Firdaus sends the children home inside the end so that she may chat and spend some time with Kabir, with whom she has fallen in love.
On Valentine’s Day, Salman Khan presented the movie’s first poster. On March 28, 2019, a special screening of the movie was hosted for Bollywood stars as well as their families. Due to the 2019 Pulwama assault, the filmmakers decided not to distribute the movie in Pakistan. In June 2019, the movie was released as a VOD on Amazon Prime Video.
