Mili Avital, Chen Baoqi, as well as Alon Aboutboul feature in Noodle, a 2007 Israeli film directed by Ayelet Menahemi and written by Shemi Zarhin and Ayelet Menahemi.
When a Chinese lady working in Israel for Israeli flight attendant Miri Kalderon is deported for overstaying her work visa, her lack of Hebrew language skills makes it hard for her to convince Israeli authorities that she has been accompanied by a small kid. Miri, who has been bereaved twice as a result of the continuous Arab-Israeli war, has been going through the motions of life, seemingly disconnected from existence itself.
Her choice to assist the youngster, dubbed “Noodle,” in reuniting with his mother, who has returned to Beijing, ends up benefiting Miri in ways she could not have anticipated.
The movie won the Israeli Film Academy’s (Ophir Awards) Best Supporting Actress Award and the 2007 Montreal World Film Festival’s Special Grand Jury Prize. It has received a slew of additional accolades at film festivals around the country and across the world, such as the 2010 Jersey Shore Film Festival’s Best Feature Film Audience Choice Award.
The film was nominated for a number of Israeli Film Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Film, Best Music, Best Screenplay, and Best Direction.
“This Israeli movie on grief and loss surprisingly takes the guise of a crowd entertainer,” wrote one reviewer. Others concurred, pointing out that movies like Noodle are uncommon, combining superb storytelling and performances with enough “heart” to emotionally engage the spectator. “The movie is indeed a poignant comic-drama of two human beings accompanying one other on a miraculous trip that leads them both back to something like a meaningful existence,” according to a review from the 18th annual Tucson Jewish Film Festival.
