Yash Chopra’s Yash Raj Films directed and produced Darr: A Violent Love Story, a romantic psychological thriller released in 1993. Sunny Deol, Juhi Chawla, and Shah Rukh Khan appear in the movie, which also has Anupam Kher, Tanvi Azmi, and Dalip Tahil in supporting parts.
Darr has received a number of awards, along with the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Healthy Entertainment. So at 39th Filmfare Prizes, the movie garnered 10 nominations, comprising Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor for Deol, Best Actress for Chawla, as well as Best Villain for Khan, and won two awards, including Best Comedian for Kher.
This was Chawla’s fourth box office blockbuster of the year, cementing her reputation as a leading woman in the 1990s. Khan’s depiction of an obsessive lover was praised by critics and fans alike, and he received several accolades for it.
Kiran Awasthi, a lovely college student, visits her brother Vijay and his wife Poonam at their house. Rahul Mehra, a student who has a crush on her, is following her around like a stalker. Suneel Malhotra, Kiran’s lover, is a navy officer. Rahul Mehra is the son of his captain, Avinash Mehra. Rahul makes an effort to befriend Suneel in order to get closer to Kiran. When she gets home, Rahul is constantly stalking her on the phone.
This puts a lot of strain on her and her family.
Suneel and Kiran tie the knot. When Rahul learns about this, he attempts but fails to murder Suneel. Suneel gets involved in an accident as well as marries Kiran once he recovers. Rahul is still adamant about not giving up. Suneel plans a honeymoon for Kiran in Switzerland while still purchasing additional tickets to Goa to keep the stalker at bay. Vikram “Vicky” Oberoi, a friend of Rahul’s, is killed and it appears that he’s the stalker. When Rahul hears about Kiran’s whereabouts, he shows up at her hotel.
Kiran recognises him and invites him to join them in their celebrations. Suneel discovers that Rahul had been Kiran’s stalker had always.
He abandons her on a boat and approaches and assaults Rahul, who stabs him and abandons him for dead. When Rahul arrives at the boat, he coerces Kiran into marrying him. Suneel returns to beat and murder Rahul. Kiran and Suneel are reunited with their families in India.
The Shiv-Hari pair wrote the soundtrack for Darr (Shiv Kumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia). Anand Bakshi is the author. It was the year’s second most popular Bollywood soundtrack album. In India, the soundtrack CD sold 4.5 million copies, generating at least 10.8 crores (equivalent to 66 crores or US$8.8 million in 2020). Planet Bollywood’s Rakesh Budhu awarded the album 8.5 out of 10 stars in his review.
