In February, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 to hold artists more accountable for their work. The legislation requires streaming businesses to have a redress mechanism to resolve customer complaints, which many see as a tactic to limit the creative freedom of OTT platforms and content providers. The standard’s effects can already be felt five months after it was established. One of the first complaints about Anurag Kashyap’s short film Ghost Stories, which will be included in the 2020 anthology, was received by Netflix India.
A scene in which the protagonist, played by Sobhita Dhulipala, is seen devouring her miscarried foetus has the complaint concerned. The complaint notes, “The scene is not required for the story, and if the creators wished to add such a scene, there should have been a trigger warning for women who have gone through the trauma of miscarriages.”
According to the standards, user complaints must be registered within 24 hours of receipt and remedied as quickly as possible. The Netflix Grievance Redress Officer is now investigating the situation (GRO). According to sources, the representative informed the production company of the complaint because it was a partner-managed project by RSVP Movies and Flying Unicorn Entertainment.
Talking about the Netflix web series Ghost Stories, Janhvi Kapoor, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Sukant Goel aired on Netflix 2020. For these quartets of thrillers, the directors of the Emmy-nominated Lust Stories (Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee, and Karan Johar) reconvene.
