Udta Teer had to dub scenes after crew giggles

Akash A Kaushik’s debut directorial Udta Teer is being appreciated and is performing well at the box office. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, he explained why Rahul Bose became the film’s surprise package and what made Ayushmann Khurrana say yes this time.

Kaushik has been shuttling from one screen to another to watch reactions. He says audiences have been clapping during some scenes, which is exactly the response a comic caper wants.

Casting against the laugh

Rahul Bose is not an obvious name for comedy. That, Kaushik said, was the point. Cast a known comic actor and the audience immediately expects something funny. Cast Bose and it takes longer to see the punchline coming. In the film he plays the head of the Counter Terrorism Squad who gets stuck in a bizarre situation, so the humour comes from the character’s predicament rather than goofiness. Kaushik said Bose asked him, “How on earth did you think of me to play this role?”, but the director trusted Bose’s serious screen presence and expressive eyes to hold both tones together.

The scenes that had to be dubbed

On the elevator and morgue sequences, the unit kept bursting into laughter. Because the film was shot using sync sound, the crew’s giggles could be heard in the audio, so a few scenes had to be dubbed later. Kaushik called those moments “comedy gold” and said the team knew they would be remembered. Bose also added his own touches. For a scene where Suhail and Sandeep Anand make him dance, he asked for the background songs in advance, learned the original choreography, and matched the steps himself.

Ayushmann’s gutsy yes

Ayushmann Khurrana plays a Pakistani in the film. Kaushik says he does not think many actors would be “gutsy enough” to take the role. Khurrana was already hooked during the narration, then more surprised when the script revealed the character’s identity. The director had pitched five films to him in the past; each time Khurrana liked the script and said no. This time Kaushik predicted another no, but Khurrana assured him he would not turn Udta Teer down.

What it says about star casting

Actor-led comedies often lean on performers with established comic timing. Udta Teer flips that logic. By putting a serious actor in a ridiculous situation, the film lets the story create the laugh rather than the face. That also gives the audience a reason to recommend it: they can say Rahul Bose is the surprise.

Why this lands

Udta Teer combines a proven comedy writer’s directorial debut with casting choices audiences did not expect. Kaushik’s credits include Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Housefull 4 and Bhooth Bangla. Here are the key takeaways:

  • Rahul Bose’s character is serious, not goofy; the absurd situation creates the comedy.
  • Sync-sound shooting meant crew laughter forced a few scenes into dubbing.
  • Ayushmann Khurrana took on a Pakistani role Kaushik says many actors would avoid.
