Sanjay Gupta dies at 59 after late-night fall at home

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, best known for crime thrillers such as Kaante and Zinda, died at 59 after a late-night fall at his residence in Versova, Mumbai. Versova police shared preliminary findings on Saturday after his family found him at home in the morning.

What the CCTV footage shows

Police said the house had CCTV cameras and separate bedrooms for each family member. Around 2 am on Friday night, Gupta was sitting in the drawing room; he then went to the kitchen and lost his balance.

According to a police officer, he struck the corner of the wall between the kitchen and the drawing room and fell. A dog was nearby in the recording, but his wife, son and daughter were asleep and did not hear the fall.

The CCTV detail matters because it shifted the public conversation from speculation to accident. The camera record is the central piece of evidence in the early account.

The investigation so far

When his wife and two children woke up, they found him lying on the ground and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. The Versova police have registered an accidental death report and are probing the exact sequence of events.

The officer said the cameras clearly show he lost his balance and fell, and the family has no suspicion against anyone. A forensic team visited the spot, and the body has been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem.

A career built on crime dramas

Gupta leaves behind a body of work that gave Bollywood some of its most stylised crime thrillers. He made films that thrived on tension, ensemble casting and slick urban action, and that made him a familiar name even to audiences who never met him. These are the titles most fans will reach for first:

  • Kaante – an ensemble thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Suniel Shetty.
  • Zinda – a dark thriller that paired John Abraham with Sanjay Dutt.
  • Shootout at Lokhandwala – a hit he produced.
  • Kaabil – the 2017 Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam starrer and his most successful box-office release.

His 2017 film Kaabil stood out as a commercial high point. For an audience that grew up on his films, the police account makes the loss feel both sudden and painfully quiet.
