Salman Khan on the 5 Years His Nana Refused to Speak to Salim
On Bigg Boss, Salman Khan recalled why his maternal grandfather stopped speaking to Salim Khan for five years after the 1964 wedding.

On a recent Bigg Boss episode, Salman Khan turned a conversation about regret into a rare family story: the five years his maternal grandfather refused to speak to his father, Salim Khan.
What Salman shared on the show
Salman had been speaking about the show’s zero-tolerance policy and how contestants often regret their actions. He said he had recently apologised to his father and asked for forgiveness if he had ever failed him or said anything hurtful.
From there, he explained why his nana pulled away after his parents married. “Let me tell you, when my parents got married, there was no religious connotation,” Salman said, as reported by Hindustan Times. “Only my maternal grandfather was upset.”
The objection, he added, was not about faith. His grandfather simply did not want his daughter marrying into the film industry. Salman’s mother’s siblings liked Salim Khan; the concern came from one worried parent.
Five silent years, then sweets
Salman said his nana did not speak to Salim Khan for five years. The standoff ended when Sohail Khan was born. Salman recalled his nana travelling from Mahim to Bandra with sweets and expressing regret for missing his grandchildren grow up while he held on to his anger.
The grandfather later made his position clear in a different way. When Salma returned to her family home after a quarrel, he would send her back, telling her she was always welcome but not as a place to hide after a fight.
- Salim Khan and Salma, born Sushila Charak, married in 1964.
- The couple had four children: Salman, Arbaaz, Sohail and Alvira.
- The five-year silence between Salim and Salman’s nana ended when Sohail was born.
Why this family story matters
The anecdote gives fans a closer look at the Khan family’s early years and reframes a story that is often reduced to a religious divide. Salman’s account centres it on profession and parental worry instead.
The family later changed shape when Salim married Helen in 1981. Salman has previously said it took time for him and his siblings to accept Helen, and the family has since been open about how close their bond is today.
