“Not SUGA, but My Friend Yoongi”: El Capitxn Reveals BTS Star’s Quiet Act of Kindness

by Ratan Srivastava

As BTS’ SUGA nears his military discharge on June 21, a deeply moving excerpt from producer El Capitxn’s upcoming essay collection is touching hearts online. Titled We’re Still in the Interlude, the preview reveals the life-altering friendship between El Capitxn (real name Jang Yi Jung) and BTS’ Min Yoongi.

After his boy group HISTORY disbanded in 2017, El Capitxn fell into a creative and emotional void. Music, once his lifeline, became hollow—until he reunited with SUGA to co-produce D-DAY and the track Snooze in 2023. That collaboration, followed by an appearance on SUGA’s talk show Suchwita, helped him rediscover his voice—both literally and figuratively.

The essay highlights a quiet, powerful moment: SUGA encouraging him to sing again and offering to pay for his vocal treatment. “That wasn’t BTS’ SUGA,” he writes, “that was my friend, Min Yoongi.”

Now a renowned producer and founder of VENDORS, El Capitxn credits SUGA not just for collaboration, but for healing. “Maybe my real dad raised Jang Yi Jung,” he says. “But producer SUGA raised El Capitxn.”

The full essay collection drops June 23, 2025.
