Kumar Taurani Breaks Silence on Vashu Bhagnani Legal Battle
Tips Industries head Kumar Taurani speaks on the Vashu Bhagnani copyright case over recreated songs, the Bihar filing, and why the friendship is on pause.

Tips Industries’ Kumar Taurani has finally spoken about the copyright row with producer Vashu Bhagnani, and his message is clear: the decades-old association is now formally on pause. In an interview with trade journalist Komal Nahta, Taurani laid out why Tips believes it holds the music rights to the recreated tracks at the centre of the dispute — and why the friendship has cooled.
What sparked the legal fight
The clash became public in May 2026 when Vashu Bhagnani filed a case in Katihar, Bihar, over the recreated versions of “Chunari Chunari” and “Ishq Sona Hai” in the Varun Dhawan-starrer Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Bhagnani’s argument is that the original songs belong to his 1999 film Biwi No. 1, and that the new film’s makers did not have permission to reuse them. Tips, which produced Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, has maintained that it owns the rights.
Kumar Taurani’s stand on rights
Kumar Taurani rejected the argument that producers deserve royalty from recreated versions. He compared the deal to buying an M F Husain painting for Rs. 1 crore: once a buyer pays the full amount, they have the freedom to resell it or rent the asset. “I paid the full amount to buy the rights and signed the contract. Then, why the objection?” he asked.
Taurani added that the agreements date back 20–25 years and that Bhagnani did not object during that period. He also pointed to jurisdiction, saying the contracts state that Mumbai will handle any legal dispute. “He filed the case in faraway Bihar, that too in a court located 200-300 kms from Patna. Wahaan jaane ki kya zaroorat hai aapko?” Taurani said. He noted that Tips got relief from the High Court and Supreme Court, and that the direction now is to fight the case in Mumbai if there is a grievance.
The friendship, and where it stands
The personal fallout is just as significant. Taurani said Tips brought Bhagnani into the industry and that the two made their first films together. When Bhagnani later wanted to produce independently, Taurani said they encouraged him to move ahead. But asked whether the two are still on talking terms, he answered: “No. Abhi thodi doori hai.”
Taurani also said Bhagnani had acknowledged Tips as the rights holder for certain songs a few years earlier. During Coolie No. 1 (2020), which released directly on Amazon Prime Video, Bhagnani wanted to use two songs from the original Coolie No. 1. Tips was among the producers of the original and held its music rights, so the parties worked out a deal.
Why this matters for music rights
Remixes and recreations are a recurring flashpoint in Bollywood because a hit song can bring instant recognition to a new film, but the underlying rights are often split between labels, producers and composers. This fight shows how old contracts and new streaming releases can collide.
- Old contracts matter: terms signed 20–25 years ago still govern today’s remixes.
- Jurisdiction matters: where a suit is filed can change the early momentum of the case.
- Personal history matters: long professional ties can turn into public legal distance.
