Jailer 2 becomes first Tamil film past Rs 703 crore worldwide

Jailer 2 has just redrawn the ceiling for Tamil cinema. On its twelfth day of release, the Rajinikanth starrer crossed the Rs 700 crore mark at the worldwide box office, reaching Rs 703 crore, according to trade estimates shared by Pinkvilla.

The split shows a genuinely balanced blockbuster: Rs 454 crore from India and Rs 249 crore (USD 26.2 million) from overseas markets. That combination is what has made the film the first Kollywood title to ever enter the Rs 700 crore club.

A record that waited eight years

Kollywood’s previous global benchmark, Rs 600 crore, had stood since 2018, when 2.0 became the first Tamil film to cross that figure. Before that, 2.0 had also cleared the Rs 300 crore, Rs 400 crore and Rs 500 crore milestones in one monumental run.

Jailer 2 has now ended that eight-year gap. Instead of simply matching the old peak, it has pushed the bar higher with plenty of running still to come. For audiences who track box office as closely as film credits, that matters: it resets the ambition level for Tamil tentpoles and gives a new reference point when comparing pan-Indian releases.

The Rajinikanth benchmark effect

The list of Kollywood’s global benchmarks reads like a Rajinikanth career highlight reel. Pinkvilla notes that the superstar has been at the centre of every major milestone for decades.

  • Rs 10 crore, Rs 20 crore and Rs 30 crore: Rajinikanth starrers were the first to clear each mark.
  • Rs 100 crore: Sivaji became the first Tamil film to get there in 2007.
  • Rs 200 crore: Endhiran broke that line in 2010.
  • Rs 300 crore to Rs 600 crore: 2.0 set all four records in 2018.
  • Rs 700 crore: Jailer 2 now stands alone in 2026.

What comes next

For fans and the trade, the next marker is obvious. Pinkvilla’s tracking suggests Jailer 2 has “plenty of gas left in the tank,” and the Rs 800 crore milestone is a very real possibility. If it gets there, it would be the first Tamil film to do that too.

As always with box office, these are trade estimates rather than final audited numbers. But the direction is clear: a Rajinikanth release has again become the event that moves the entire industry’s goalpost.
