Amitabh Bachchan mourns Kaante director Sanjay Gupta, 59

Bollywood is in shock after filmmaker Sanjay Gupta was found dead at his Versova home on Saturday morning. He was 59. Police say he appears to have fallen inside the house late on Friday night and sustained a severe head injury.

Among the most personal tributes came from Amitabh Bachchan, who worked with Gupta on the heist thriller Kaante. On Sunday, Bachchan remembered the director in an emotional Hindi blog post, without naming him directly.

“Unable to understand how all of this is happening”

Bachchan wrote: “A friend, a fellow artiste and a true devotee of art has left us at such a young age! I am unable to understand how all of this is happening.”

He went further: “Our dear companions from the world of art are being snatched away from us. What wrong have they done to deserve such a fate?” He also referred to the belief that difficult planetary positions were bringing loss, and wrote, “May all the planets in the solar system retreat to their respective homes and stay apart from one another.”

The wording is striking because it is not a career recap. Bachchan is speaking about a colleague as a person, and about a community of artists that feels smaller after the loss.

What the police have shared

The Versova police have registered an accidental death report and are investigating the exact sequence of events. CCTV footage from the house shows Gupta sitting in the drawing room before going to the kitchen around 2 am. There, police say, he reportedly lost his balance and fell against a wall.

  • His wife and two children found him in the morning and rushed him to hospital, where he was declared dead.
  • Police are treating the incident as an accidental fall while the investigation continues.
  • The filmmaker was cremated on Sunday, with Bollywood figures paying their final respects at the funeral.

Why Kaante still matters

For a generation of Hindi film fans, Gupta’s name is inseparable from Kaante, the multi-starrer heist thriller that brought together Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Lucky Ali, Mahesh Manjrekar and Kumar Gaurav. Bachchan’s note reads less like a formal tribute and more like a friend trying to make sense of an unfair goodbye.

Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi and Hrithik Roshan were among the actors who shared emotional tributes on social media. For now, the accidental death report frames the incident as a fall, with the CCTV footage as a key piece of evidence as Versova police work to confirm what happened.
