Vijay Sethupathi’s Pocket Novel Sets Jan 14 Release for Pongal
Vijay Sethupathi and Thiagarajan Kumararaja reunite for Pocket Novel, releasing January 14 during a crowded Tamil Pongal window.

Vijay Sethupathi’s next with Thiagarajan Kumararaja has an official date. Pocket Novel will open in cinemas on January 14, joining a Pongal calendar that is already shaping up to be one of Tamil cinema’s busiest.
A Super Deluxe reunion heads to Pongal
The release brings Sethupathi and Kumararaja back together for the first time since 2019’s Super Deluxe, a film that became a talking point for its unconventional storytelling. In Pocket Novel, they are joined by Malavika Mohanan, Raj B Shetty, Kishore and Dhilip Subbarayan.
For Kumararaja, this is his fourth directorial venture after Aaranya Kaandam and Super Deluxe, both known for pushing Tamil cinema in unexpected directions.
The music switch and the creative team
One of the quiet developments around Pocket Novel is behind the score. Ilaiyaraaja was initially announced as composer, but the makers later confirmed that GV Prakash Kumar will handle the music. It is his first collaboration with Kumararaja, so the film’s sonic identity will arrive through a new musical language.
Andrew Louis, creator of Prime Video’s Vadhandhi, has written the story and screenplay. The technical team includes cinematographer Nirav Shah, editor Sathyaraj Natarajan, art director V Shanmugaraja and costume designer Ezhilmathy. Subbarayan doubles up as stunt choreographer, while Natarajan is also an executive producer. Kumararaja and SD Ezhilmathy produce under the Tyler Durden and Kino Fist banners.
How crowded is the Pongal window?
Pocket Novel is not arriving alone. The confirmed and possible releases in the festive mix include:
- Ajith Kumar’s The Gladiators
- Pa Ranjith’s Vettuvam
- VJ Siddhu’s Dayangaram
- Sundar C and Vishal’s Purushan
- Sivakarthikeyan’s Seyon
- Kamal Haasan’s Indian 3
- Vikram’s Power House
- Arulnithi’s Demonte Colony 3
Not every title on that list has locked its date yet, but the sheer volume shows why Pongal matters as a release window. It is a holiday period when family audiences have the time and the festive mood to turn a film into an event.
Festival windows are treated differently by Tamil distributors. The goal is not just a strong Friday; it is to hold screens through the holiday stretch, when family audiences plan theatre visits around time off and festive gatherings. That makes the January date a strategic asset for Pocket Novel.
What it means for fans
For followers of Sethupathi and Kumararaja, January 14 is now the date to circle. The reunion carries the weight of expectations because Super Deluxe remains a benchmark in both their careers. With GV Prakash Kumar coming in as composer, the film also gets a new musical voice that will have to match the director’s distinctive tone.
As the Pongal slate firms up, the real question is whether Pocket Novel can stand out in a field where the biggest names in Tamil cinema are competing for the same holiday audience.
