Geeta Basra on Learning Hindi and Her Bollywood Journey

Geeta Basra recalls her childhood dream of acting, learning Hindi from scratch, and the poster that made Harbhajan Singh fall for her.

Geeta Basra’s journey from no Hindi to Bollywood

Geeta Basra says acting was never a backup plan. Speaking at an event, the actor recalled that when people asked what she wanted to be as a child, one answer came first: doctor or lawyer for others, but for her it was always an actor.

“Everything is God’s plan. I have had a vision since childhood,” she said. “During my childhood, whenever anybody asked me what I’d like to become when I grow up – someone says doctor, lawyer – I just had one dream: to become an actor.”

The Hindi barrier and the work behind it

The bigger hurdle came when she moved to India. Basra admitted she did not know how to speak Hindi at first. Instead of letting that stop her, she treated the language as part of her craft and worked on it deliberately.

“Earlier, I didn’t know how to speak Hindi, but it’s been a journey of learning. I didn’t know a word of how to speak the language, but I’ve learned. I have worked on it because it’s my craft,” she said.

  • Acting was her childhood goal, not a fallback.
  • She learned Hindi from zero as part of her craft.
  • She stayed selective across Hindi and Punjabi films.

That detail matters for anyone chasing a screen career: the camera may be kind, but the language is the work. Basra’s route shows preparation can close an early gap.

A poster, a cricketer and a selective career

The story took a personal turn when cricketer Harbhajan Singh entered her life. Basra laughed that “Bhajji” came into her life, liked her poster, and “it was love at first sight for him.”

On screen, she has appeared in Hindi and Punjabi titles including The Train, Zila Ghaziabad and Joe B Carvalho. She has kept her film choices selective, and now balances acting with motherhood. Her next move remains one fans are watching for.
