Sanjay Dutt has promised to make Kaante 2 in memory of his late friend and filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, who died at 59 after an accidental fall.

Sanjay Dutt Vows Kaante 2 for Sanjay Gupta, 59

Sanjay Dutt has turned a personal loss into a promise. The actor paid tribute to his longtime friend and filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, who died at 59 after an accidental fall at his Versova home, and said he will make the sequel to their iconic film Kaante in Gupta’s memory.

Dutt shared old photographs on Instagram and remembered Gupta as family. “Gupts, my brother. I still cannot believe that you are gone. We have shared so much together, so many memories and so many years of friendship,” he wrote. He added that the two had been discussing Kaante 2 recently.

“I will make Kaante 2 your dream, in memory of you my brother,” Dutt wrote. “I will do everything for this dream of yours to come true, love you forever and always.”

According to police, Gupta is believed to have fallen at home late on Friday night and suffered a severe head injury. His wife and two children found him on Saturday morning and rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

A bond built across decades

Dutt and Gupta first connected on the sets of Raj Sippy’s Thanedaar in 1990, where Gupta worked as an assistant director and Dutt played the lead. Dutt later starred in Gupta’s directorial debut, Aatish: Feel the Fire, in 1994.

Their collaborations went on to include:

  • Khauff
  • Jung
  • Kaante
  • Musafir
  • Plan
  • Zinda
  • Shootout at Lokhandwala
  • Dus Kahaniyaan

A friendship that survived a silence

The partnership was not always smooth. Their friendship reportedly hit a rough patch in 2007 during the making of Shootout at Lokhandwala. In a 2013 interview with The Times of India, Gupta said the two had not spoken for three years. They eventually ended the dispute at Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday party in 2012.

That history makes Dutt’s promise feel less like a passing tribute and more like a full-circle moment.

Suniel Shetty remembers ‘Sanj’

Suniel Shetty, who worked with Gupta on Kaante and Mumbai Saga, also paid tribute. “Still trying to come to terms with this news. We’ve spent so many days together, made films, shared laughs, arguments, ideas and memories that will stay with me forever,” he wrote. “Rest easy Sanj. You’ll be missed more than words can say.”

What the Kaante 2 promise means for fans

Kaante remains one of the most remembered titles in the Dutt-Gupta filmography. A sequel now carries the weight of a friend’s unfinished dream, not just a franchise opportunity. Dutt’s post did not include casting, timeline or studio details, but his public vow gives the idea an emotional anchor.

For now, the focus is on the filmmaker’s body of work and the collaborators who are mourning him.
