SRK’s King Sets ₹175 Crore Overseas Rights Record

SRK's King has sold overseas rights for a record ₹175 crore. Here's what it must earn to break even and how it compares with Pathaan and Jawan.

SRK's King Sets a ₹175 Crore Overseas Rights Record

Shah Rukh Khan’s new film King has made history well before its release. According to a Pinkvilla report, the film’s overseas theatrical rights have been acquired by Phars Films for ₹175 crore, making it the highest such deal in Indian cinema.

The figure is not just an advance against collections. It is a minimum guarantee, which means the distributor has committed to pay the amount upfront and will look to recover it from the film’s overseas box-office share.

A record that resets the overseas market

Until now, Shah Rukh Khan’s overseas distribution was closely aligned with Yash Raj Films, the studio that handled the global releases of Pathaan and Jawan in 2023. Phars Films has its own track record: it partnered with YRF on several titles and independently handled Prabhas’ Saaho. But the scale of this deal is new. No Indian film had previously crossed the ₹100 crore mark for overseas theatrical rights.

Why the arithmetic is suddenly serious

In international markets, distributors typically retain around 50 percent of the box-office gross. To recover a ₹175 crore minimum guarantee, King would need to collect roughly $37-40 million, or about ₹350-375 crore in gross terms, overseas.

That is a steep target even for Shah Rukh Khan. Pathaan and Jawan, his two biggest international performers, each earned around ₹400 crore overseas. So King must match or slightly exceed those results just to become profitable for its overseas partner. For a genuine success, the report points to even higher benchmarks such as RRR at around ₹430 crore and Dhurandhar 2 at around ₹460 crore.

What King has in its corner

King is directed by Siddharth Anand, who delivered Shah Rukh Khan’s first ₹1000-crore blockbuster with Pathaan. The film also marks Shah Rukh’s first project with his daughter Suhana Khan since her debut in The Archies.

  • Overseas rights: ₹175 crore minimum guarantee
  • Break-even overseas gross: ₹350-375 crore
  • Pathaan and Jawan overseas benchmark: about ₹400 crore each
  • Release date: December 24

The ensemble also includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahalawat, Raghav Juyal and Saurabh Shukla.

The larger signal for Bollywood

For years, the overseas market has been the profit centre that lets big Bollywood star vehicles recover budgets that domestic business alone cannot. A record minimum guarantee for a Shah Rukh Khan film shows distributors still see star-driven Hindi cinema as a global theatrical event, even as streaming and regional cinema compete for the same audience.

But it also means King is being priced as an event before its promotional campaign has fully built demand. The December 24 release will be watched closely because the overseas opening weekend will quickly show whether Phars Films’ bet is tracking in the right direction.
