Dhanush’s OM Chapter 1 Is a Complete Story, Not a Sequel Tease

Director Rajkumar Periasamy says Dhanush and Mammootty's OM Chapter 1 will conclude its story in the first film, not set up OM 2. It opens November 20.

Dhanush's OM Chapter 1 Will Wrap Its Story in One Film

OM Chapter 1: Udhiram – The Blood Wood arrives in theatres on November 20, 2026, but director Rajkumar Periasamy is already clearing up one assumption: the title does not mean a cliffhanger is coming. The Dhanush and Mammootty action drama is a complete story, he says, not part one of a serialised wait.

A chapter that closes cleanly

Speaking to Cinema Vikatan, Periasamy put it plainly. “The Chapter 1 in the title shouldn’t lead you to expect OM 2,” he said. “This is not a serialised story, and the narrative will completely conclude and end within this chapter itself.”

Instead of stretching one plot across parts, the film brings its characters together around a single cause. Periasamy describes the structure as “like a tree with many branches,” with several sub-branches inside the film. He also resists the gangster-drama label, calling OM an action drama with strong emotional notes.

The cast, the music and a new date

  • Release: November 20, 2026, in theatres
  • Cast: Dhanush, Mammootty, Sai Pallavi, Sreeleela
  • Director: Rajkumar Periasamy
  • Music: Sai Abhyankkar

Mammootty’s role is reportedly shaped by the migrant American characters Martin Scorsese has put on screen, rather than a conventional underworld don. Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela, both key to the film, are said to be moving beyond the on-screen images audiences usually associate with them.

The release date was not always November 20. The film was first scheduled for October 16, 2026, before being postponed to avoid a box-office collision with Jailer 2 and Suriya’s Scene, both November releases.

Why a standalone “Chapter 1” is interesting

Franchise naming has trained viewers to expect sequel hooks, especially with a “Chapter 1” on the poster. By promising a closed loop, the team is offering the satisfaction of a full story while leaving the world open for a possible next chapter if the audience wants one. That is closer to an anthology model than a serial.

For audiences, the distinction changes how the film will be judged. A serialised “Chapter 1” often leaves emotional payoffs for later, which can frustrate viewers who wanted a complete evening at the movies. Here, the makers are saying every emotional beat will land within this release.

For Dhanush, the film sits on a busy slate. He has D56 with director Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, expected in summer 2027, and Thamizh Murugan with Vetrimaaran. Reports also suggest a potential reunion with director Siva.
