10 Bollywood Proposals That Turned Destinations Into Lore
From Masai Mara to Paris, ten Bollywood couples picked a faraway spot to ask the question. Here's where they knelt and how each yes played out.
Bollywood has always sold grand romance on screen. Off screen, many of its biggest names have followed the same instinct—packing a ring, crossing a border, and choosing a place that meant something to them before it looked good in a photograph. Ranbir Kapoor proposed to Alia Bhatt in Kenya’s Masai Mara in 2022. It was a setting that matched their shared love of wildlife and safaris. Saif Ali Khan chose Paris, the city where his father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi proposed to Sharmila Tagore. He brought up marriage at the Ritz bar and later knelt outside Notre-Dame; Kareena Kapoor said yes. The couple married on October 16, 2012 and are parents to Taimur and Jeh.
New York recurs in the list. Abhishek Bachchan proposed to Aishwarya Rai on a hotel balcony after the Guru premiere in January 2007, using a prop ring from the film. Karan Singh Grover asked Bipasha Basu under New Year’s Eve fireworks in Koh Samui. Kunal Kemmu quietly added Paris to a month-long Europe trip to propose to Soha Ali Khan. Ali Fazal chose a private sandbank dinner in the Maldives—and was so relieved after the yes that he napped on the beach. Raj Kundra invited Shilpa Shetty to what she thought was a lunch in Paris, and produced a 20-carat heart-shaped solitaire on a full floor of Le Grand Hotel.
