Jailer Black-and-White Version Teased by Nelson’s DOP

Cinematographer Vijay Karthik Kannan says he and Nelson Dilipkumar have long discussed a monochrome version of Rajinikanth's 2023 hit Jailer.

Jailer Could Get a Black-and-White Version

Rajinikanth’s 2023 blockbuster Jailer could get a second visual life. Cinematographer Vijay Karthik Kannan has revealed that he and director Nelson Dilipkumar have been discussing a black-and-white version of the original film.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Kannan said the idea has been on their minds for some time and pointed to Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir as inspiration. He added: “Nelson is a huge monochrome man too.”

No release timeline or platform plan has been announced. Kannan’s comments describe a creative ambition rather than a confirmed project.

Why the timing makes it interesting

Jailer 2 arrived in theatres on October 15, 2026, and is currently running. The sequel is set three months after the first film and follows Muthuvel Pandian as a new idol-trading organisation seeks revenge for Varman’s downfall, before the conflict escalates with the Kalpak family led by Chakri Kalpak.

With the sequel in cinemas, a black-and-white version of the original could keep both films in the conversation for different audiences: newcomers catching up and fans who want to see a familiar hit in a new way.

A second life without new footage

A monochrome cut is not a new film. It is the existing footage re-graded so the black-and-white image becomes the point of emphasis. For a big star vehicle like Jailer, that can reframe a well-known title as an event, especially for viewers who already know the plot and want to focus on the craft.

Kannan did not share whether the proposed cut would play in cinemas or on a streaming platform, and no distributor has announced plans.

What we know so far

  • Jailer 2 is in theatres after its October 15, 2026 release.
  • The DOP and director have discussed a black-and-white Jailer (2023).
  • No official announcement or release timeline has been made.

The franchise revolves around Rajinikanth’s “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian. Both films feature SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa, with cameos from Hrithik Roshan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff and Vijay Sethupathi.

What Rajinikanth has next

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is lined up for Dharman, an action entertainer directed by Ashwath Marimuthu. The cast includes Simran Bagga, Nayanthara, Raashii Khanna and Yogi Babu, with Ram Pothineni reportedly expected to play the principal antagonist.

Until an official announcement arrives, a black-and-white Jailer is an intriguing what-if from the team that made it — and the kind of idea that can keep a hit franchise in view long after opening weekend.
