Janhvi Kapoor: Shikhar took half a semester off

On Koffee with Karan 9, Janhvi Kapoor recalls how Shikhar Pahariya left London mid-semester to stay nearby after Sridevi's death in 2018.

Janhvi on Shikhar's quiet half-a-semester gesture

Some support announces itself. The kind Janhvi Kapoor described on the latest Koffee with Karan 9 episode is quieter: a person who rearranged their plans and simply stayed close, without asking for recognition.

Appearing with Varun Dhawan, Janhvi revisited the weeks after her mother, Sridevi, died in 2018. Shikhar Pahariya was studying in London at the time. According to Janhvi, he took half a semester off and returned to Mumbai.

He never told her he was nearby

Janhvi said Shikhar initially stayed with his father, but later moved to a friend’s house in Juhu for about a month. She only discovered the full picture much later. His reasoning was simple, as she recalled:

“in case she needs me, I just want to be around.”

That detail matters because it reframes the gesture. He did not arrive with answers or make the moment about his own effort. He stayed close and let her need him on her own terms.

The relationship stays mostly private

Janhvi and Shikhar have known each other since their school days, before she made her acting debut with Dhadak in 2018. While public appearances have kept fans curious, they have rarely addressed the bond directly. This Koffee with Karan moment is one of the more personal windows she has offered.

Janhvi and Varun have also shared screen space in Bawaal and the upcoming Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, but it is the family memory that may linger after the episode.

Khushi’s first impulse was to comfort her sister

Janhvi also spoke about the night the family learned of Sridevi’s death. She recalled rushing into Khushi Kapoor’s room crying, only to watch Khushi stop her own tears the moment she saw her. Khushi sat with her and comforted her instead. “I have never seen her cry about it since,” Janhvi said.

Why quiet support lands differently

In a celebrity culture that rewards big, visible moments, Janhvi’s story is a small masterclass in presence. Grief seldom needs a performance. It needs someone who can stay nearby without demanding a script.

  • Show up quietly and consistently.
  • Do not wait to be asked for help.
  • Let the grieving person set the pace.

The episode premieres on JioHotstar on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 PM.
