Mrunal Thakur Was First Offered Rashmika’s Role in Sita Ramam
Mrunal Thakur opens up about the Sita Ramam casting switch: she was first narrated Rashmika Mandanna's role before Hanu Raghavapudi called her his Sita.

Four years after Sita Ramam released, Mrunal Thakur has shared the casting what-if that could have taken the film in a different direction. In a new interview, she revealed that her first narration for the 2022 romantic drama was not for the role that made her a household name.
The team arrived in Mumbai to narrate the part eventually played by Rashmika Mandanna. But during the conversation, director Hanu Raghavapudi changed his mind. Mrunal recalled him saying, “No, she’s my Sita.”
A five-hour train of thought
The switch came after Nag Ashwin, the director of Mahanati, encouraged Mrunal to hear the story. What began in a cafe moved to Hanu’s office and stretched to about four and a half to five hours. Mrunal said she still had no idea who would play Ram or which producers were backing the project.
The length was not a problem. She described Hanu as an expressive narrator who made it easy to feel the characters and their emotions from the start.
What made her say yes
- She was first approached for Afreen, the role later played by Rashmika Mandanna.
- Hanu reimagined her as Sita Mahalakshmi during the narration itself.
- The emotional pitch left her in tears, and she gave her yes the next day.
Playing a princess had been a long-held dream, and that made the shift feel meant to be. Mrunal said her gut was “screaming” that no one other than she could play Sita. The decision did not need a long deliberation, she added, because the screenplay had already produced such a strong reaction.
She also pointed to Veer-Zaara as a film that still makes her cry. If a story cannot bring an audience member, actor or filmmaker to tears, she said, the emotion will not reflect on screen.
Why the reveal lands now
That near-miss is worth pausing on. In the finished film, Afreen opens the story in a contemporary thread, while Sita Mahalakshmi is the emotional centre the letters slowly reveal. Moving Mrunal from one to the other changed what audiences remember most about her in the film.
Sita Ramam paired Mrunal with Dulquer Salmaan as Lieutenant Ram and Rashmika as Afreen. A love story told through letters and memory, the film earned acclaim for its music, performances and emotional pull. Mrunal’s Sita became a career-defining role, so hearing that she almost stepped into another character is a rare reminder of how fragile film casting can be.
For viewers who return to the film, the detail adds a new layer: the version they love exists because one director trusted the actress’s pull to the centre of the story.
